There are lots of truly amazing games being featured with Laura Croft Go taking the #1 top spot. Go and check some of them out, we are sure you wont be dissapointed.

For anyone who hasn't tried Gunbrick yet take apples advice and play one of the best games of the year. For all of you that have, a huge thankyou for your support. We are really chuffed to bits.

Get it on iOS!

The first of these announcements has now passed and Valve have announced 'Steam OS' a free operating system that people can put onto their PC. It is an extension of their Big Picture Mode that they introduced last year which basically makes it so you can play PC games on your TV in a more friendly and intuitive way, all controlled with a gamepad.

Steam OS means that you don't need Windows on that PC as Steam OS will automatically take the user into Big Picture mode! The OS is built upon Linux which does mean that not a lot of the catalogue will run on the platform straight away but Valve also talk about the ability to stream any other Steam content from your Mac or PC that you have elsewhere in the house, plus it seems that now there is a real reason to support it, Linux support is likely to go through the roof. You can find the full announcement here: http://store.steampowered.com/livingroom/SteamOS/

Everyone fully expects one of the further two announcements to be Valves Steam Box which would be a standalone piece of hardware that runs the new OS. This could have a pretty interesting knock on affect for Nitrome as we would suddenly be in a position where our Flightless game on completion would be available on what is essentially a console. Pretty exciting stuff!

So what do you think? Is this a big deal for the gaming industry or do you think it is hype that will quickly die away? What else do you think Valve are going to announce in their other two announcements? What do you think the knock on effects are for Nitrome? Now that we have comments we finally have a place to chat about such things! :)

Icebreaker: Pocket Gamer Feature

Why did Nitrome take so long to move into mobile gaming? As a lot of the games are mobile a knowledge of Objective-C is also beneficial and candidates used to using Cocos2d & Box2d would be ideal though this is not essential. Knowledge of source control (especially git) would also be a plus.

For a good idea of the sort of games you would be working on please check out the following two titles that are in production:

Icebreaker - A Viking Voyage (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad/Android)

Flightless (Steam/PC/Mac)

All candidates must be able to show examples of their work to be considered. Salary is negotiable. The position requires you work at the Nitrome office in London so candidates must live within commuting distance or be willing to relocate for the role. Please send CV's and Example links to jobs@nitrome.com with the subject line 'programmer application'.

More Steam Greenlight Releases!

Hi Nitromians!

You may have heard already that Steam has again greenlit another batch of titles. Still no greelight for Flightless though!

This has had the knock-on effect of bringing our project closer (to position 75) in the top 100 list countdown. This generally happens after games get greenlit. To greenlight Flightless, we really do need the support of the Nitrome community!

Remember, every single vote can make a huge difference!

To help express your support, you can vote for Flightless on our greenlight page. This will help to take our project up the rankings and help it get some attention from the nice people at Steam.

For anyone that doesn't have a Steam user account, you can still help us by spreading the word about our project and sharing it with others on social networks!

Play Flightless: Click Here!
Greenlight Page: Click Here!

Thanks to everyone that helps us push to greenlight Flightless!

Interview on Mochiland

There is an in-depth interview live on the Mochi Blog with Matthew Annal!

The interview covers topics such as Mat's history in the Flash games industry, Flash Games Summit 5 and more.

We think that it would make for an interesting read for anyone that wants to know more about Nitrome, Mat or the Flash Games Industry in general!

We were recently interviewed by Mochi Media's Colin Cupp about our ventures into the Mobile gaming space in the article titled Flash Meets Mobile with Nitrome Touchy.

We give pretty detailed insights into our Touchy app, flash games and what you can expect in the future from Nitrome!

Hi Nitromians,

You may or may not be aware that two of our games in the past (Twin Shot 2 and BC Bow Contest) use a microtransaction system called Mochi Coins. We just got word that Mochi will no longer be offering their coins service as of October 15, 2012. You can see the post announcing this here: Mochi Coins Update

While we were surprised to hear the news we had already as a company decided to no longer support the format. You can see we made no further games using the coins after BC Bow Contest and we had intended to remove the coins altogether from those two games once we had our own login system available.

Unfortunately given the short notice period given to us we are not going to be able to transition things as smoothly as we would like but we will do our best to find the best solution in the timeframe for our users. We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who supported us by buying the coins in the games we made using them.

Along with the coins the login system that was provided by Mochi is also going offline so this will revert saving the game to being only available on a single computer. Mochi have stated that the content people have purchased will still be available to them following that date but that people will not be able to buy new coins or items from that date. We feel at Nitrome that the best solution is going to be to offer that content freely in the game and we will be looking at the two games to decide how to best do that. We will give you more news on that as we have it!

iPhone 5 unveiled!

Big News last week as Apple announced not just a new iPhone (the iPhone 5) but also an all new iPod touch.

Both devices have a new taller screen (or wider in the case of how most games are played on the device).

As Nitrome are making games for iOS we would want to support these devices and so we follow this news closely.

While we are a little apprehensive with the variety of screen resolutions that are starting to appear within the iOS ecosystem we are happy to say that this news was fairly expected and that it will not cause any considerable impact to the development of Icebreaker – a Viking Voyage. We would also say that we will relish having our game playable on the shiny new devices and can’t wait to give them a go.

We will have a proper update on just how it affects the iPhone and Ipod versions of Icebreaker coming your way soon!

Casual Connect

Hi Nitromians!

We were approached by Casual Connect to include our game Swindler amongst the line up of other great games at the Casual Connect Asia 2012 event.

Casual Connect Asia 2012 is a gathering of casual gaming professionals that showcase the best the industry has to offer across platforms.

We were very proud to hear that our game went down a storm at the event!

Play Swindler: Click Here!
Casual Connect Photos: Click Here!

SOPA, PIPA and the Internet

Firstly welcome to our newest blog section - Industry News.

Industry News will cover significant events that may affect or influence Nitrome Development. We will use this as an opportunity not just to highlight the event but to give our opinion or highlight potential benefits or problems that arise. Our old 'News' category will still continue to cover events that are directly involving Nitrome.

Our first story to cover is about the SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act) and PIPA (Protect IP Act) that are currently being discussed. The aim of the SOPA is to stop online piracy by giving more power to the American government in effect allowing them to turn off any site that they feel infringes piracy laws and a lot of film and music studios are pushing for this bill to pass.

On the other side, a lot of powerful web based companies (Google, Facebook, Twitter, Microsoft, Reddit etc.) are against the act as they suggest it may cause big changes to popular sites and web services. Imagine if Youtube was taken down as a result of a user uploading copyrighted material for example.

So how does this affect Nitrome?

Well, as we make all of our own content, hopefully it wouldn’t have any direct impact either way, but some services that we use such as Facebook, Twitter and Youtube could be affected so it’s not without consequence. Lots of sites such as those mentioned (i.e. Reddit) are planning to take their services offline from 18th January in protest of the bill. Although Nitrome is in opposition of the 'Stop Online Piracy Act' we will be keeping the site online as per normal. You may however find disruption to the social sites that we use. So take this as a heads up just incase! :)
